Don't stop me now, I'm having such a good time!

A week off

Last week I made myself off for a few days to reset my mind and go away from water and slum issues. My boyfriend joined and we went to Bangalore and Kerala (state in southern India). It was an amazing retreat from noisy, dirty and polluted Delhi, but we werent lucky- it was raining almost all the time. Still, great food and great landscapes managed to compensate it!

Foood - never enough!

New Seemapuri- another resettlement colony

In order to have a comparative perspective, how the situation of water supply is in settlement colonies, i visited another slum on the other part of Delhi- on the very east of it.

This settlement was created in 1976, so people have been living there already for some time, with comparison to Savda where the settlement took place 4 years ago.

Still, the water situation is not that much better, it is just more crowded and much dirtier. Two employees of the local NGO showed me around and interviewed some residents in order to get a grasp of the situation.

I was one of the biggest attraction that day for people. Whenever i was taking pictures of borewells and handpumps, they were trying to be in the picture as well. Whenever we stood for a while to talk to some people, there would be a crowd of any possible age range :)

Another one ;)

"A calling is not something you know, it's something you grow into, through trials and mistakes. Work shouldn't just be fun. Work should be like life- sometimes fun, sometimes moving, and defined by meaningful events. Attack your fears, rather than shy away from them. Bring what you do in alignment with who you are. Freedom is the confidence that you can live within the means of something you are passionate about. Failure's hard, but success at the wrong thing can lock you in forever. Don't be seduced by artificial love. Be open to defining experiences. Don't mistake intensity for passion. You don't find your purpose above the neck, you find it below the neck, when you're transformed by what you have witnessed. You can get good at what you need to to serve what you believe in. Get your mind 80 percent of the way there, then go looking for the calatalyst. Look backward as much as forward, inward as much as outward. Nothing helps like knowing you're not alone. There's a powerful transformative effect when you surround yourself with like-minded people. Create an environment where the truth is invited into your life. If you develop the character, the odds are pretty good you can succeed. Success is defined as when you are no longer held back by your heart, and your character blossoms, and the gifts you have to offer the world are apparent. Don't cling to a single scenario, allow yourself many paths to the same destination. Give it a lifetime to pay off. Things you work hardest for are the things you will most treasure."

Nice quote

"...I'd rather help than watch. I'd rather have a heart than a mind. I'd rather expose too much than too little. I'd rather say hello to strangers than be afraid of them. I would rather know all this about myself than have more money than I need. I'd rather have something to love than a way to impress you".

4 weeks in Delhi!

Yes- by this weekend i will have been in India for four weeks already...

any reflections from my side? well... research in a developing country/in delhi has been a spectrum of all possible emotions: frustration, excitement from challenges, annoyance, anger, sympathy, inspiration and many more! Although commuting there is a tiring experience, relying on the translator- also another barrier, the heat and killing sun- another one; yesterday i realised that i love it! after interviewing another group of those women who are collecting water and what kind of even basic problems they are struggling with, asking me to come again here next time and solve the other problems of their lives....- i felt another mission! :) but nooo... i wont be going to india again soon.. although i would love to work those problems out and push the municipalities to move their bureaucrat asses! :)

Anyways, although im getting headache every evening in here, im loving this experience... the food... the heat- everything is so ambiguous anyways!

I am done with so called Phase I- interviewing all the blocks and mapping the water supply points. Next Phase is social mapping where community club members helped me map all the available borewells households have. Last one- interview all other actors involved in the issue of water supply- NGOs and the Delhi Water Board- that one will be exciting and interesting to hear! :)

Have a look at some pictures and enjoy! :)
